Authentication of the Historical Data for Restoring the Tang Decree: Focusing on The Kaiyuan Rites of Tang
Zhao Jing
The Kaiyuan Rites of Tang is one of the most fundamental documents for restoring the decree of the Tang Dynasty. When the records in it differs from other document, firstly, we should comprehensively examine different versions of The Kaiyuan Rites to ascertain whether there is error or default in the record. Secondly, we should take into account that the systems recorded in The Kaiyuan Rites were not limited to the legislation in the seventh year of the Kaiyuan reign (719 A.D.), but also included new system before it was completed in 732 A.D. And the absorption of new system by “Preface on Principle” and “Annotations of the Five Rites” in The Kaiyuan Rites were out of step, so there exist contradictory records between the two parts. Moreover, the new system promulgated during 719 to 732 A.D. were not reflected entirely in The Kaiyuan Rites, and even the new system with the mark of “Permanent Routine” might be abolished at any time. Those all bring uncertainty to the former achievements on restoring the Tang decree.
