A Review of the Studies of Fu in Europe and the United States
David R. Knechtges
Abstract: In the Western academia, most scholars studying fu in early stage were mainly from Europe, including Austria, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Early in the mid-19th Century, those scholars began their studies from translation. At that time, The Songs of Chu (Chu Ci) was of most interest to the European scholars, which was generally considered as poesm written by Qu Yuan. August Pfizmaier, an Austrian scholar, was the first one to translate the Chinese fu into German. After that, French sinologist Le Marquis d’Hervey de Saint Denys and British sinologist James Legge also translated the Chinese fu. Herbert A. Giles compiled Gems of Chinese Literature in which he selected and translated poems from the earliest times to the Qing Dynasty, and many fu were included. In the early 20th Century, many European scholars began to devote themselves to the studies of Chinese fu, including Arthur Waley, Eduard Erkes, Erwin Ritter von Zach, and etc. In the United States, Professor Hellmut Wilhelm and James Robert Hightower are the scholars earlier entering the research field of fu, and at present, the leading figure is Professor David Knechtges.
