in the Early Edo Period: Taking Correct Meaning of Poetic Rules by Ishikawa Jozan for Example
Qi Xiaoming
Abstract: In the field of comparative poetics, it is undoubtedly more significant to analyse how the Chinese poetic theories were rejected while spreading in East Asia than to concern how they were accepted. Ishikawa Jozan’s option of Canglang’s Notes on Poets and Poetry in Correct Meaning of Poetic Rules just reflected the common poetic approach of the Chinese poets in the early Edo period. Although Jozan cited much of Canglang’s poetic theory, there was fundamental difference between the two books, indicating that the spread of Canglang’s poetic theory in the early Edo period had encountered resistance from the Chinese poets who stuck to the literary stand of Zhu Xi or the Jiangxi poetic school. Meanwhile, it showed that besides the rejection by native literature, the literary thought being earlier introduced in could also form a barrier in the process of a foreign literary trend spreading to the receiving country.
