The Barbarian, Immortal, and Auspiciousness: the Dreams on the Queen Mother of the West of Ancient Kings and Emperors
Zhang Jiuqing
Abstract: Many ancient Chinese kings and emperors had dreamed of the Queen Mother of the West (Xi Wangmu). Those dreams were not only about immortality, there also reflected their strong political appeal. The Queen Mother of the West in the dreams of kings and emperors symbolized Huaxia and the barbarians, or expressed the desire of living forever, or presaged the heavenly auspiciousness. The Queen Mother of the West in different faces could not only help us know her images and the evolution, but also help us deeply understand the political connotation of mystery novels in the Han Dynasty and fairy novels after the Han Dynasty.
