江淹《望荆山》的创作时地颇有争议，而这又关系到对江淹在刘宋大明、泰始间仕历的研究。通过梳理相关史实，参之以江淹诗文，可知该诗创作于宋明帝泰始四年（468）秋江淹前往襄阳入巴陵王刘休若幕府途中经过荆山时，因为当时巴陵郡王刘休若并未前往湘州，仍然在襄阳雍州刺史任上。
